Spring is a wonderful time of year. While most of us focus on the warm weather and beautiful flowers, there are unfortunately lurking dangers that demand our attention. Ticks are a continual scourge here in Connecticut and one of the top vectors for disease transmission. Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Babesia are some of the major infections we see both in our dogs and cats as well as ourselves. Infected animals may have a fever, painful walking, poor appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. While this seems frightening, we do have weapons in the fight against these parasites.
For dogs we have several options that can reduce our beloved pets exposure to these creepy critters. Our best option is a newer medication called Bravecto. It is an oral chewable pill that protects against fleas and ticks for 12 weeks. No greasy stains or spots on our pets and the best protection possible for almost three months per pill. Another option is our topical medication, Activyl. This works monthly and has some ability to repel ticks, fleas, and mosquitos as well as kill the pests as they feed.
Recent weather changes with mild winters increase our risk for encounters with these bugs. Lets protect our furry friends and keep them as safe and healthy as possible year round!
